Assessment description

An open book exam is a student assessment method designed to promote and assess higher order learning such as critical thinking, problem solving, synthesis and evaluation. Open book exams, or take-home exams, require students to connect course material, their own experiences, and other sources of information to solve real-world scenarios or problems

Beyond the Exam: An Alternative Online Assessment Toolkit

This assessment combined several elements: essay questions were given in advance, discussions were encouraged between students on the essay questions, and they could pre-write their essay answers to paste into the exam. The exam was an untimed and open book with short answer questions plus only a selection of the essay options.
